The Hospital Particular do Algarve – Gambelas has launched a new Stomatherapy Nursing Consultation, aimed at providing specialised care for individuals with ostomies and their caregivers.
The creation of an ostomy, whether intestinal or urinary, represents a significant change in a patient’s life, requiring both physical and emotional adaptation. This consultation has been developed to support individuals who have undergone this type of surgery or who are preparing for it, ensuring continuous and individualised follow-up through all stages of the process — from preoperative preparation, through hospitalisation, to the return home and reintegration into daily life.
The consultation is led by Nurse Ana Amorim, who has specialised training in Stomatherapy. She provides expert guidance on stoma care, prevention and treatment of complications, selection and fitting of ostomy appliances, and training in self-care techniques.
More than teaching procedures, the purpose of this consultation is to promote patient autonomy, safety, and quality of life. It respects each individual's pace of adaptation and also addresses practical everyday matters such as diet, clothing, physical activity, and social life.
The Stomatherapy Nursing Consultation takes place on Mondays, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, by appointment, and reinforces Grupo HPA Saúde's commitment to differentiated, humanised, and patient-centred care.
